Virat Kohli announces his retirement from T20I

Virat Kohli declared retirement from T20I matches after India won the final of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup by seven runs. He received the Player of the Match award for his impressive 59-ball 76 in his final T20I, contributing to India’s second World T20 championship win.

Virat Kohli played a vital role in the Fina match of T20 World cup against South Africa by scoring 76 runs of 59 balls and helped team India come out from the difficult phase of 34 for three wickets down inside the powerplay of the match.

“This was my last T20 World Cup, this is exactly what we wanted to achieve,” Kohli told the broadcasters after India defeated south Africa in the T20 World Cup 2024 final

“One day you feel like you can’t get a run and this happens, God is great. (It is) just the occasion, now or never kind of situation. This was my last T20 game playing for India. We wanted to lift that cup.”

Yes I have, this was an open secret (retirement). Not something that I wasn’t going to announce even if we had lost. Time for the next generation to take the T20 game forward. He deserves it. It’s been difficult to hold things (emotions) back and I think it’s going to sink in later. It’s an amazing day and I’m thankful,” This is what Kohli stated in the post match conference.

Kohli, who debuted the T20I scene in June 2010, played in 125 matches for India in the format, accumulating 4188 runs, which consisted of one century and 38 half-centuries. He was honored with two Player of the Tournament awards in the T20 World Cups of 2014 and 2016. Kohli ranks as the second-highest scorer in T20Is, trailing behind Rohit Sharma.
