After beating Colombia 1-0 in the final match of Copa America 2024, Argentina became the team to win the most Copa America winner.
The Copa America is the South American continental tournament where the top countries compete each other for the prestigious championship.
The first edition of Copa America was held in 1916 and it’s the oldest international continental football tournament.
In its initial stages, the competition had a sporadic schedule and involved only four countries – Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay.
Nonetheless, the continental competition has experienced numerous alterations. It was renamed Copa America in 1975, the roster of teams slowly grew, and the tournament now follows a predetermined timetable.
Uruguay held the lead in the early stages of the contest, securing six championships in the first decade. Previously Uruguay was the most Copa America winner, winning 15 times.
