New head Coach of Indian cricket team: Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the new head coach of Indian cricket team. BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed on social media on 9th July 2024 (Tuesday).

Gautam Gambhir assumes the position from Dravid, who held the role from November 2021 to June 2024. Dravid left the position after India’s triumphant T20 World Cup victory in the USA and West Indies. During Dravid’s tenure, India made it to the final of the ICC World Test Championship and the 50-over World Cup in 2023, and emerged as champions of the T20 World Cup in 2024.

“It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr. Gautam Gambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward. His clear vision for Team India, coupled with his vast experience, positions him perfectly to take on this exciting and most sought-after coaching role. The @BCCI fully supports him as he embarks on this new journey”. Jay shah stated on his social media handle.

But my goal is the same as it has always been, to make every Indian proud. Gautam Gambhir posted on his social media handle after being appointed as the new head coach of Indian Cricket Team.

First Assignment of Gautam Gambhir

The newly appointed head coach of Indian cricket team, Gautam Gambhir’s first assignment will be in the upcoming India tour of Sri Lanka featuring 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is which will starts from 27th July.

“In his new role as Head Coach of Team India, Gambhir will be responsible for overseeing the development and performance of the Indian cricket team. His focus will be on developing a culture of excellence, discipline, and teamwork, while also nurturing young talent and preparing the team for future challenges on the global stage.” the BCCI said in a media release.

Gautam Gambhir’s Coaching experience

Surprisingly, Gautam Gambhir, who was a mentor for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in both 2022 and 2023, has never taken on the role of a coach for any team, whether it was at the domestic cricket level, an Indian Premier League (IPL) team, or a national team. In 2024, Gautam Gambhir returned to his role as a mentor for Kolkata Knight Riders, the team for which he had previously achieved two IPL championships.
